***NEW FOR 2024 WITH TNVC SUPERGAIN HIGH PERFORMANCE 2376+ FOM TUBES***

Manufactured by ACTinBlack, the DTNVS family has become one of the most successful BINOD (Binocular Night Observation Device) designs with over 26,000 units in the field and has seen extensive use and testing by Law Enforcement, Commercial, and international military customers. While the original DTNVG and DTNVS family were originally designed as Automatic Gain Control / Automatic Brightness Control (AGC/ABC)-only systems for simplicity and ease of use, as tube performance continues to improve, especially L3Harris’ unmatched SuperGain Unfilmed White Phosphor technology, end-users have increasingly requested Manual Gain Control (MGC) in their BINOD (Binocular Night Observation Device) systems to allow them to adjust the system gain, giving them greater control over the brightness of the intensified image by regulating the level and intensity of amplification.

The Manual Gain Control on the TN/DTNVS-MG is regulated by a newly redesigned front plate, utilizing a single, dual-function, knurled knob in the same location as the original device power control knob, which controls both system ON/OFF, gain, and navigation illuminator function by pressing and/or turning. The TN/DTNVS-MG uses a specially designed flex circuit, attached to a standard L3Harris F9800 10160-format or F9815 11769-format tube in place of the standard “C001” configuration EGAC “pigtail” used on standard MX-11769 tubes configured for the AN/PVS-14, and similar to what is used on the AN/PVS-31A Binocular Night Vision Device (Elbit Systems of America, and Photonis tubes can be adapted to use this flex circuit as well). The TN/DTNVS-MG also features an adjustable IR output for the navigation illuminator located near the centerline of the unit.

While manual gain control has been relatively uncommon in BINOD (Binocular Night Observation Device) systems (neither the AN/AVS-6/9 Aviator’s Night Vision Imagining System, ANVIS, nor the L3Harris GPNVG Ground Panoramic Night Vision Goggle utilize an MGC circuit), it is standard for most monocular systems, as too great a brightness differential between the aided and unaided eye can result increased eye strain and fatigue, as well as the aided eye simply “taking over,” negatively affecting depth perception and situational awareness, particularly in mixed lighting conditions where the unaided eye may still be able to provide depth and color cues. With the increasing popularity of articulating bridge goggle designs with independently rotating pods and individual tube cut-off like the TN/DTNVS, many end-users are increasingly utilizing their dual tube systems like monoculars in mixed lighting conditions by flipping one pod up to retain both aided and unaided vision, and to allow one eye to remain naturally dark-adapted, making the introduction of a manual gain function to the TN/DTNVS-MG a useful and important function for many end-users.

Moreover, with improvements in image tube performance (between 2016 and 2020, L3Harris improved their average Unfilmed image tube performance by over 50% and averages have continued to increase) as well as the introduction of TNVC’s SuperGain tubes with an increase from 65K fL/fc nominal reading to 110K fL/fc nominal reading at 2X10-6 fc (standard image tube gain measurement) and advanced MCP technology, resulting in clearer and brighter images, these top-of-the-line image intensifiers may actually appear too bright at maximum gain settings for many users, particularly for end-users who may be light sensitive (if you set your smartphone and computer screens to the dimmest possible settings or need sunglasses the moment you step outside–you may benefit from manual gain). Finally, many users in urban or suburban areas or dimly lit ranges with large amounts of mixed light such as many Law Enforcement and many private users often find it easier to use their peripheral vision and read ambient lighting conditions by reducing system gain to a lower level, even when using both tubes.

Utilizing Manual Gain Control DOES NOT remove, eliminate, or “turn-off” ABC (Automatic Brightness Control), which is present in all modern Generation 3 image intensifier tubes, and which automatically regulates image tube brightness based on the amount of light the tube is receiving / amplifying. All Gen. 3 tubes will automatically adjust to match ambient lighting conditions–Manual Gain Control simply gives the end-user additional control over the brightness / gain level, but will still automatically adjust based on conditions, however, when moving from mixed light to extremely dark conditions, manual gain systems adjusted to very dim settings may need to be re-adjusted to provide a usable image.

***Neither Manual Gain Control NOR Automatic Brightness Control are related to / the same thing as gated / autogated tube power supply, ALL TNVC manufactured systems, including the TN/DTNVS-MG utilize image intensifier tubes with Autogated power supplies***

SuperGain:

Introduced commercially by TNVC in partnership with L3Harris in 2022, SuperGain is the latest image intensifier tube technology and one of the most significant evolutions in Generation 3 night vision systems and performance since the introduction of Unfilmed technology and available at TNVC as a premium option.

Over the years, TNVC has been fully committed to making the very best and most advanced, High-Performance MIL-SPEC, duty-ready night vision, thermal, and visual augmentation systems technology available to ALL customers.

Manufactured by L3Harris and distributed by TNVC, SuperGain Unfilmed White Phosphor image intensifier tubes are already in use with the United States military, including Special Operations Forces in some of the DoD’s most elite formations. These new SuperGain image intensifiers increase the Luminance Gain (Gain) specification from the standard 40,000-80,000 fL/fc to between 100,000-120,000 fL/fc, greatly increasing the image intensifier’s ability to amplify and collect light, resulting in a noticeably brighter image with increased low light performance and extending operational envelope and ability to see into dark areas.

***ALL SYSTEMS WILL BE 2376+ MINIMUM FOM***

SuperGain image intensifier tubes have undergone extensive testing both by the U.S. Army’s Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) at Fort Belvoir as well as USSOCOM and other Special Operations Forces organizations, and are currently being fielded and in-service around the world in the newest, most technologically advanced night vision systems in the force, including the AN/PSQ-42 ENVG-B Advanced Goggle as well as panoramic fusion goggles.

From the end-user’s perspective, the SuperGain tubes will be noticeably brighter than standard Unfilmed White Phosphor tubes under most conditions and will provide more useable information in extreme darkness. However, the most significant difference that users in the field will see is the ability to see deeper into dark corners and underbrush, allowing them to detect potential threats beyond the range of typical image intensifiers. This can be a significant advantage in both urban areas / inside of structures as well as in more rural areas with vegetation and heavy canopy and subterranean operations.

While many consumers, both government and commercial have been focused on FOM (Signal to Noise Ratio multiplied by Center Resolution expressed in lp/mm) as a metric for image intensifier performance and image quality, with manufacturers pushing the envelope of performance through improved methods and processes.

Luminance Gain is typically set by the manufacturer, and is the measure of how well an image intensifier can amplify light, and is one of the most critically important factors of image intensifier performance–in fact, the term “Failure,” in MTTF (“Mean Time To Failure”), commonly used to describe tube longevity and durability and expressed in terms of hours, is broadly understood to represent a roughly 50% loss of Luminance Gain.

Nevertheless, Gain has typically been set by the manufacturers at a lower setting (in accordance with MIL-SPECs) due to concerns that too much Gain could lead to increased and undesirable noise in the image, which can be true with lower performance tubes. However, with modern advances in tube manufacturing processes and consistency, L3Harris has been able to increase average tube performance by over 50% in the last six years, with modern tubes having less noise overall, allowing L3Harris to increase the tube Gain, and therefore increasing the amount of useful information provided to the user without the same levels of increased noise.

In order to maximize the benefits of the increased Gain and ensure image quality these new SuperGain systems from TNVC will ONLY be available with a minimum Figure of Merit (FOM) specification of 2376+, the highest minimum performance specification currently available to the wide market, and with actual average tube performance exceeding that of current USSOCOM specifications.

Not only do SuperGain tubes provide improved light amplification and more information to the user, but effects can be felt on the user’s end as well—the overall brighter image allows the pupil to remain smaller, even in low light conditions where image intensifier tubes begin to dim, effectively improving the user’s vision and allowing them to take full advantage of the information provided by the SuperGain tube as well as reduce eye fatigue from long term use. Meanwhile, neither image intensifier life, nor reliability are affected, with SuperGain tubes being every bit as durable and reliable as typical Unfilmed White Phosphor image intensifier tubes.

The TN/DTNVS-MG (Dual Tube Night Vision System – Manual Gain) is a Product Improved version of the DTNVG (Dual Tube Night Vision Goggle) first introduced in 2016, integrating four years of service with military, law enforcement, and civilian end-users worldwide, resulting a lighter weight, yet more durable housing with numerous improvements and design enhancements that make the TN/DTNVS-MG easier to support and maintain.

The TN/DTNVS-MG is a lightweight, articulating goggle design, and is built on proven technology and enhanced for greater reliability compared to previous generations of BINODs.

At 17.9 ounces and available with both L3Harris MIL-SPEC Unfilmed White Phosphor the TN/DTNVS is one of the lightest weight, highest performing BINOD (Binocular Night Observation Device) currently available on the market. Despite the light weight, the TN/DTNVS-MG does not sacrifice durability or ruggedness, and exceeds MIL-STD-810G and USSOCOM test protocols for drop and impact by a factor of two. The TN/DTNVS-MG is also rated for water immersion at 66 ft. (20m) for two (2) hours.

The independently pivoting monocular pod design allows users to rotate the individual monocular pods away from the center of the housing and out of the wearer’s field of view, allowing clear, unobstructed natural vision through one or both eyes. This can be a huge benefit in enclosed spaces like vehicles or in close quarters, where stowing the goggles could create unnecessary snag hazards or otherwise be an impediment to the end-user.

When the TN/DTNVS-MG is stowed, the articulating pods can also be folded back to bring the goggles center of gravity closer to the wearer’s head, improving balance and comfort while worn, while reducing the profile of the wearer.

Moreover, when rotated, the TN/DTNVS-MG features automatic individual channel cut-offs, which cuts power to the image intensifier tube, shutting it off when rotated beyond approximately 60 degrees from the center housing (well beyond realistic IPD adjustments), both to protect the image intensifier tube and prevent backsplash when the monocular pods are rotated away from the wearer’s field of view.

The TN/DTNVS-MG is a full-featured goggle with adjustable system gain, as well as objective and diopter focus, using standard PVS-14 style optical assemblies (including optional RPO 3.0 lightweight optical lens assemblies), meaning they are compatible with common accessories for the PVS-14, as well as an onboard IR LED with a built-in ON/OFF indicator that alerts the wearer to whether the onboard IR is switched on inside the tube, as well as a low battery indicator light.

The DTNVS housing is designed and manufactured by ACTinBlack, based in Luxembourg, a leading manufacturer and supplier of night vision equipment to European military and law enforcement customers.

Similarly, the DTNVS is powered by a single CR123 battery, which can provide over 25 hours of battery life on a single lithium cell. While there are benefits to AA powered binocular systems, power consumption and battery efficiency are not one of them, hence why most AA powered BINODs include a provision for an external power supply, often requiring expensive interface cables and battery packs, and while conversion parts will be available for the DTNVS to support external power supplies, the basic configuration of the DTNVS does not include an external power option, reducing weight, complexity, and another potential ingress point for moisture and foreign debris.

The TN/DTNVS-MG Standard does not come with Interpupillary Distance (IPD) Stops, as most users do not find them to be necessary. However, some users do find the IPD Stops to be a useful addition to ensure that the monocular pods return to the same position when rotated back down. Rather than choosing one or the other, ACTinBlack has designed an optional IPD Stop Adapter, which gives individual users the choice as to whether to use the IPD Stops or not. The TN/DTNVS-MG(I) includes an IPD Stop Adapter Plate for users who would prefer to have this capability.

The IPD Stop Adapter assembly is an optional, retrofittable part, and does not need to be installed during assembly, and can be added to the DTNVS-MG Standard at a later time.

The TN/DTNVS-MG is one of the highest performing, best value BINODs currently available–it truly “has it all,” the highest performance L3Harris image intensifier tubes, light weight, and packed feature set, and as always, comes with TNVC’s industry leading Lifetime Limited Warranty!
